Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) in Research

What is the PPI?

This is a group composed of members of the public, that brings a different view, experience, and knowledge to research teams. It is when research is being carried out ‘WITH’ OR ‘BY’ members of the public rather than ‘to’, ‘about’ or ‘for’ them. The group was officially formed in 2021 and has 11 members.

Rationale for establishing a PPI group

Everyone benefits from research. Research provides evidence about what works best. When the public gets involved in research, it will help shape the research to be done, how it should be carried out and how results can reach and be useful to patients, carers and the public and make a difference to the way health and social care services are provided in the future. In other words, the PPI aims at Improving research quality, relevance, acceptability and beneficial to the community.

PPI Involvement in research

To date, PPI have been involved in various Maternal and foetal health research such as LACTATE, DIPLOMATIC, APTSEPSIS, and other upcoming studies.

We aim to Introduce PPI to the wider MLW research themes and assist any type of study in protocol development, implementation, and dissemination of study results.
