Study indicates rise in multidrug resistant Typhoid bacteria

Typhoid fever remains an important infectious diseases globally, responsible for an estimated 26.9 million infections and 269,000deaths in 2010. A new study by Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Programme published in PLOS Neglected Tropical DiseasesJournal in April this year indicates a rapid of emergence of multidrug resistant Salmonella Typhi in Blantyre, Malawi, a bacteria that causes typhoid.

The study was carried out at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, one of the major referral hospitals in Malawi. It is expected that the results of the study will help to support efforts to better understand the reservoirs and transmission of the disease and the international initiative to reduce the burden of typhoid across the globe.
