Staff forums provide an excellent opportunity for staff members and management to interact. This sentiment was expressed by MLW Director, Professor Henry Mwandumba, during the most recent staff forum held on 14 March 2024. Professor Mwandumba also encouraged all staff members to continue their hard work and teamwork, as it reflects positively on the organisation’s performance.
“When we received visitors in 2023 and 2024, they all remarked on the same aspect of MLW – that we are like a family. This demonstrates the importance of our warmth and welcoming atmosphere, which is appreciated by visitors in various capacities.”
The staff forum featured a presentation from the Human Resources Manager, who outlined the addition of a new clause (clause 12.12) regarding staff conduct concerning politics. Additionally, it has introduced a waiting period of 7 days after the termination of a contract before gratuity and other dues are processed, ensuring that departing staff follow all exit procedures and return institutional property.
Of particular importance was the presentation by Risk and Compliance Manager, Peter Sikwenta, who announced that MLW has developed a Whistleblowing Policy to uphold transparency, integrity, and accountability. Sikwenta explained that this new policy will soon be disseminated through the document management system.
Staff forums serve as platforms for information sharing, feedback on operational and research practices, and opportunities for interaction. This was the first staff forum of 2024.
