Science for All Inspires Prospective University Students

MLW’s Science for All initiative hosted a career guidance day on 3 February 2024 aimed at advising aspiring university students in Blantyre on available science career paths for their upcoming university applications.

The event, attended by over 100 prospective university students, provided a platform for them to interact with accomplished scientists and gain insights into various science careers both locally and internationally.

MLW’s Translation Science Champion Dr. Alice Mbewe urged the students to persevere towards their goals, emphasising the importance of determination. “No goal is too distant if you are willing to work hard for it. Even when faced with challenges, keep pushing forward,” remarked Mbewe.

Mbewe also encouraged students to remain open-minded about their future paths, as sometimes life may lead them in unexpected directions.

MLW’s Study Physician Dr. Gareth Lipunga advised students interested in medical courses to focus on their studies, particularly during the crucial first year, as it sets the foundation for their future careers.

Aspiring cardiologist James Bernad Kachepa, a student from Ngumbe Secondary School, expressed gratitude for the opportunity, stating that the career guidance day provided invaluable insights from successful scientists, which will help him make informed decisions about his future career path.

“Today’s meeting has been enlightening. Hearing from accomplished scientists has fuelled my passion for becoming a cardiologist,” Kachepa noted.

The Science for All Initiative aims to nurture the next generation of scientists and leaders, aligning with MLW’s broader objective of advancing research and scientific knowledge.
