MLW, KUHES, QECH and Worldwide Radiology Pact Pleases Its Members

Malawi Liverpool Wellcome (MLW), Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital’s (QECH) Radiology Department, Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHES), and Worldwide Radiology have expressed satisfaction with their existing relationship. This follows an interactive meeting that representatives from the four institutions held on 5 April 2022 which aimed to appreciate the progress that the existing union has made in improving research quality and service delivery at QECH’s Radiology Department.

QECH’s Chief Radiographer George Mubisa said the partnership between the four institutions has transformed work at the main referral hospital’s Radiology Department.

Mubisa pointed out that the radiography training that MLW extended to two members of staff at QECH was a key step in re-shaping work and standards at the hospital.

“I thank MLW and Worldwide Radiology Team for the support directed to our department. MLW installed internet connection in the Computed Tomography (CT) room, and this has accelerated communication among service providers thereby improving service standards,” said Mubisa.

A representative from Worldwide Radiology Team Elizabeth Joekes said there is a growing need to put in place infrastructure that may support digital imaging services at QECH. Joekes said the Information Technology (IT) infrastructure will help in improving communication between all radiology staff thereby ensuring that patients are getting results for CT scans within the required timeframe.

“We want to build the IT infrastructure around the sharing of images to simplify the access of such images by researchers and external expatriates.  This IT infrastructure will also accelerate service delivery at the Radiology Department as patients will be receiving the results of their CT scans in a more timely fashion,” she said.

The symbiotic relationship between MLW, QECH, KUHES, and representatives of Worldwide Radiology was established five years ago. The partnership also plans to support up-and-coming Malawian postgraduate radiology trainees as they (MLW, KUHES, QECH, and World Wide Radiology) eye to start training them at KUHES in September.
