MLW Hosts CEO and COO of the Wellcome Trust

On the 22nd and 23rd of February 2024, MLW welcomed a distinguished delegation comprising the new CEO of the Wellcome Trust, Dr John-Arne Rottingen, and the COO, Dr Paul Schreier. Throughout the visit, MLW showcased its work in research, training, and operations.

Key highlights of the visit included a tour of the CREATOR Building, which is currently under construction, as well as visits to the MLW Lab and the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital.

In his address during the visit, Dr John-Arne Rottingen, the CEO of the Wellcome, shared his vision for the forthcoming years. He expressed his pleasure at visiting the Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Research Programme and gaining insights into its work from the institution’s staff and researchers. He conveyed gratitude for the warmth and welcome extended to him by everyone.

MLW Director, Professor Henry Mwandumba, also outlined MLW’s vision and future direction. He emphasised the growth of operations, training, and research capacity at MLW.

“Since its inception, MLW has been forward-thinking and has made significant contributions to global research and leadership. We eagerly anticipate further collaboration with the Wellcome  to enhance capacity for training and research within the organisation.”

The visit by the CEO and COO precedes MLW’s process of drafting a new grant proposal to the Wellcome for continued funding.
