MLW Dedicates April to Staff Wellbeing

On the morning of 13th April 2024, staff at the Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Research Programme took part in a fitness walk challenge organised by the Health and Safety Department. Setting off from Milare along the M1 road to Chikwawa and retracing their steps from Kamuzu Viewpoint, employees enjoyed a refreshing stroll aimed at improving their health and well-being. This initiative is a vital part of MLW’s 30-day health challenge, designed to inspire all personnel to adopt healthier lifestyles.

Stephen Amos, MLW’s Occupational Health Nurse, highlighted the importance of this challenge within the organisation’s wellness framework, emphasizing its role in enhancing productivity by addressing mental, social, and physical health. He stated, “I encourage those who missed this fitness walk to make time for it independently, while also urging them to participate in future events. These activities aim to start conversations about health among staff, promoting a culture of prioritising well-being to improve productivity, efficiency, and work quality.”

Expressing pleasure at the increasing number of staff members undertaking fitness challenges independently, Amos added, “It’s encouraging to see more individuals embracing physical exercise and gym visits of their own accord.”

Nyadani Chitsulo, Data Manager at MLW’s Data Management Support Unit, highlighted the challenge’s role in fostering collaboration and unity among colleagues, saying, “This event is crucial in promoting collaboration and strengthening relationships among staff members from various departments and sections, encouraging interaction. It also has the potential to enhance staff productivity by prioritising staff well-being.”

Katalina Tonthola, MLW’s Laboratory Technician, saw the fitness walk challenge as evidence of the organisation’s commitment to employee wellness. She commented, “Participating in this challenge for the second time, has significantly helped me in achieving my health goals for the month.”

As the 30-day health fitness challenge draws to a close, the MLW’s Health and Safety Department has scheduled a second fitness walk challenge for 27th April 2024, further demonstrating their dedication to employee well-being.
