In response to the cholera outbreak that has surfaced in Blantyre District, Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Programme (MLW) has donated plastic utensils to the District Health Office.
The donation package extended on 19 May 2022 comprised of 150 basins and 150 buckets. MLW’s Field Sites Manager Chimwemwe Theu said the rise in cholera cases in the district compelled the research organisation to extend the aid.
“You may have read, heard, or seen that cholera cases have been increasing in some areas of the district. This increase was the main driving force of this donation. It is the expectation of MLW for the donation to primarily benefit communities through health facilities,” said Theu.
He, therefore, sounded a call to other stakeholders to emulate MLW’s gesture by supporting the Blantyre District Health Office in cholera response and preparedness.
The Blantyre DHO, through its representative Dr. Zaziwe Gunda, expressed gratitude for the donation. He said the donation will enormously contribute to alleviating cholera disease in the district.
According to Gunda, 100 cases of cholera have been registered in Blantyre district and five of them have succumbed to the outbreak. A vaccination campaign has been rolled out to address the outbreak in the district.
