MLW Biostatistician Dr. James Chirombo embarks on New Career Path with LSTM

Dr. James Chirombo, a biostatistician at the Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Research Programme (MLW), has been selected for the prestigious Career Track at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM).

The LSTM Career Track program is designed to help staff advance into academic roles within the institution, while recognizing excellence in research and teaching.

Dr. Chirombo views this opportunity as a pivotal moment in his professional growth.

“This is a significant step in my career development. MLW, while instrumental in my work, is not a higher learning institution. Reaching a certain point means seeking an academic home to further my career. With a permanent position at LSTM, I will be able to contribute to long-term research efforts,” He shared.

Dr. Chirombo joined MLW in 2018, shortly after earning a PhD in statistics, and has since played a key role in numerous research studies. As a biostatistician, he has provided essential support in study design and data analysis, while mentoring trainees ranging from interns to PhD students.

With this new opportunity, Dr. Chirombo is committed to strengthening statistical capacity at MLW.

“I will continue my research, focusing primarily on malaria in school-age children and the intersection of climate and health. Additionally, I look forward to contributing to teaching at MLW, LSTM, and KUHeS,” MLW’s Biostatistician added.

Meanwhile, Dr. Chirombo has tipped students and researchers working within MLW’s diverse research groups to be dedicated and open minded.

“There are so many researchers at MLW and if you are open to learning from others, your growth will accelerate. The diverse research at MLW can help you find your niche, so always look for opportunities,” he advised.

The LSTM Career Track program offers a clear progression from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer, Reader, and eventually Professor, with a focus on research, teaching, and knowledge exchange.
