Renowned institutions working across the globe in health, research, and academics have launched an institute to help the world prepare for future pandemics. Known as the Pandemic Institute, the institute will lead the world in its understanding of and ability to manage pandemics and will aim to accelerate the response to save lives. The Pandemic Institute is based in Liverpool, United Kingdom, and was officially launched on Monday, September 13, 2021.
During the launch, a panel of senior personnel in research spoke about the value of an institute of this kind.
Acting Director of the Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Programme, which is a collaborating partner to two of the founding partners of the Institute, Professor Henry Mwandumba, was one of the panelists and he described the institute as ‘invaluable in coordinating and informing us all.
He said Malawi is part of a global community and as such “the institute offers an opportunity for a coherent approach to identify learning opportunities and apply this learning around the world to better prepare us all for the next global health threat.”
The Pandemic Institute is being led by Professor Matthew Baylis, and its founding partners include the University of Liverpool, Liverpool School for Tropical Medicine (LSTM), Liverpool City Council, Liverpool John Moores University, Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Liverpool City Region, and KQ Liverpool.
Director of LSTM Professor David Lalloo also said, “The Pandemic Institute will facilitate collaboration to avoid the next pandemic and being in the situation we are in now”.
