MLW under the Samala Moyo Exhibition hosted 19 students from Hilltop Academy for a hands-on MLW tour which included science lessons and career guidance and mentorship.
The tour took place on 5 February 2023 and the students also interacted with scientists who work in the laboratory.
“As I stepped into the lab, I was immediately struck by the equipment and the buzz of activity among MLW researchers. What I loved the most is that I have witnessed experiments in progress, and I have interacted with great scientists” commented Altaf Khan, a student from Hilltop Academy.
Community Engagement and Exhibition Officer Kestern Mkoola said it was important to establish good impressions on career choices, especially in science which can be neglected by students who are about to go to college.
“It is good to build the passion in the students now,” Mkoola highlighted. “The mentorship question-and-answer session and lab tour was tailored to guide the students to make better career choices. These all came after interactions with researchers. The visit to MLW lab, research wards, archives, and other departments enabled the students to learn about different careers in science.”
Science for All Ambassador Vitumbiko Msowoya mentioned that he finds joy in being an inspiration to his fellow students.
“I am very excited; I am helping young students to realize their people potential the same way other scientists helped me when I was young” He explained.
The visit by Hilltop Academy was specially arranged and designed for Form 5 students who are interested pursue careers in health, medicine, and other related sciences.
