Incorporating technological advancements, such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), into the work of Field Research Assistants (FRAs) can significantly enhance their efficiency and the quality of their output.
Chimwemwe Theu, the Field Sites Manager made these remarks during the FRA’s Day event hosted by the Communications and Public Engagement Department on Friday, November 29, 2024, at Nalipiri Eco Resort in Mulanje.
Theu emphasized the importance of investing in FRA training and capacity building, stating that equipping them with the necessary skills is essential for addressing future challenges in health research.
“There are several challenges currently impact the work of FRAs, including technological integration, community misinformation, mental and physical well-being, climate change, as well as ethical and cultural sensitivity. To address this issue, we propose a few strategies, including providing leadership opportunities for FRAs, strengthening connections between FRAs, researchers, and policymakers, and continuously recognizing FRAs through awards, publications, and professional development opportunities,” he said.
Brian Ngwira, the Clinical Research Support Unit Lead, highlighted the significant improvements in the quality of data collected by FRAs, attributing this to continuous professional development training and a deeper understanding of the importance of their roles.
“Let’s continue to grow together by improving processes, supporting one another, and striving for excellence. The future of health research depends on your passion, adaptability, and dedication,” Ngwira added.
Chifuniro Chabuka, who was named the Best FRA of the Year 2024 during the event, expressed that the gathering served as an excellent platform for networking, sharing experiences, and exchanging ideas among FRAs working in different settings and studies.
“This award is not just for me but for all FRAs. It is a motivation for us to continue working hard and a testament to the crucial role we play in health research,” Chabuka said.
Lindiwe Mafuleka, the Communications and Public Engagement Manager, explained that the event was organized to provide FRAs with a break from their demanding work environments, offering them an opportunity to refresh, network, and share knowledge and experiences.
This year’s FRA Day was celebrated under the theme, “Bringing Knowledge to Light: Celebrating FRAs’ Excellence in Health Research.”
