Latif Ndeketa will evaluate and improve methods for determining vaccine impact in LMICs

Dr. Latif Ndeketa, an Infectious disease and vaccine theme researcher at MLW, has recently been awarded the Medical Research Council (MRC) and Discovery Medicine North (DiMeN) Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTP) Fellowship. The DiMeN partnership utilizes the combined expertise of five world-leading institutions (Universities of Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield, York, and Newcastle) to train the next generation of researchers to tackle the major health problems facing the population. Latif Ndeketa will be registered at the University of Liverpool and in his Ph.D., he will evaluate and improve methods for determining vaccine impact in low-and-middle-income countries.

I am very thrilled to be offered this Ph.D. – Rhosheen Mthawanji

Rhosheen S Mthawanji has been awarded MRC Discovery Medicine North (DiMeN) DTP fellowship for her Ph.D. Her Ph.D. will be based at the University of Liverpool and supervised by Dr. Marcus Blagrove, Dr. Mayah Wardeh, and Professor Matthew Baylis. She was offered her first-choice project titled ‘Vector in the machine: How accurately can mosquito transmission of viruses be predicted by Machine learning?’

This project will look at mosquito virus interactions and how viruses in mosquitoes can be predicted before the viruses spread to a new era. When asked why she selected this project she answered “Virus-mosquito interactions are not fully understood in Malawi, I would like a Ph.D. in which I could apply the skills in my country and possible collaborations with other institutions”. Predicting viruses using Machine learning is novel and this project will work on developing a pipeline that is efficient.
