MLW Promises to Support Secondary Schools

MLW has promised to continue supporting secondary schools to motivate students to pursue science careers and become future leaders in science. . Immunity and Infection Group lead Dr. Kondwani Jambo made these remarks during a Science for All Quiz which took place on 16 September at MLW as part of the 25th Anniversary celebrations.

“It is high time we start providing solutions to our health problems within Malawi. This can become a reality only if we invest in our young students who are the future of science. Such competitions motivate them to work extra hard in their studies. It is also through initiatives likes Science for all where they find other scientist whom they look up to people who were once students but are great scientists,” Jambo highlighted.

Apart from the quiz, visiting students from Mfera Secondary School in Chikwawa, Ngumbe and Zingwawa Secondary Schools from Blantyre performed scientific experiments.

A science teacher from Mfera Secondary School Edgar Mambala thanked MLW for involving his school in this activity.

“Sometimes it becomes hard to get recognition to compete with other schools because of the location of our school. Being involved in these kinds of activities has encouraged our students to aspire more. They have gained necessary exposure required for hard work” Mambala said.

Southwest Education Division Senior Quality Assurance Officer Chimwemwe Juwa commended MLW for promoting equal participation of different schools which also promotes excellent performance amongst students.

In the quiz which had three sections including Biology, MLW section and Chemistry, Stella Maris emerged winners against Chichiri Secondary School. This also comes two months after Stella Maris Secondary School won a trophy against Ndirande Hills, Ngumbe and Zingwangwa Secondary Schools in a similar quiz which was held at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences.

Siphokazi Kuyewawa, a student from Stella Maris, shared a secret to the schools’ success. She said hard work and determination are the keys to the school’s victory. She also hailed MLW for hosting the quiz as it has initiated interaction between students from different schools.
