Malawi Liverpool Wellcome (MLW) Programme hosted visitors from Malawi Scientific Advisory Board (MSAB) and International Scientific Advisory Board (ISAB) from 17th -19th April 2023.
During the meetings, at MLW’s head office in Blantyre, the MSAB & ISAB representatives had an audience with over 400 scientists, researchers, and academicians from MLW who presented efforts on a wide range of topics such as Anti-Microbial Resistance, Vaccines, Social science, Population Health, Maternal & Neonatal health, and Clinical medicine.
In his closing remarks, Professor Mwandumba highlighted that MLW has made an indelible mark in the health system of Malawi and beyond by providing evidence-based solutions to health problems.
“One of MLW’s missions is to train the next generation of scientists. It is worth noting most of the MLW scientists have progressed in their careers. For instance, most researchers who had master’s degrees have earned PhDs and are training fellow scientists. This is such an amazement in the science arena.”
Professor Mwandumba also emphasised the important networks and collaboration which MLW has built with the Ministry of Health and various non-governmental organisations.
Amidst their visit, MSAB & ISAB had time to tour the construction of the Malawi Liverpool Wellcome (MLW) Programme’s Clinical Research Excellence and Training Open Resource (CREATOR) building.
Standing in awe of the tall building, Professor Nyovani Madise said; The CREATOR will be the highlight of excellence in health research as it will attract excellent health research scholars from different parts of the world not just Malawi and Africa.
Among other notable figures, the MSAB & ISAB entourage comprises Professor Address Malata, Professor Timothy Gondwe, Professor Al Ntenje, Professor Nyovani Madise, Professor David Goldblatt, Professor Chris Whitty, Professor Catherine Law, and Professor Chris Tang.
Overall, scientists have said the MSAB-ISAB visit was a great success, providing a platform for researchers to share their latest findings, exchange ideas, and discuss the future directions of the field.
