MLW Joins Zodiak in Best Girl Awards

Malawi Liverpool Wellcome (MLW) Programme through its Science for All Initiative joined Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS) and Plan Malawi in awarding girls who performed very well during the 2022 Malawi School Certificate of Education Examinations. The ‘Best Girls’ award was given to nine girls of which three were from the host secondary school St. Mary’s in Zomba. The other girls were from Bakhita Girls’ in Balaka, Ludzi Girls’ in Mchinji, Lilongwe Girls’ in Lilongwe, St. Mary’s in Karonga, Loyola Jesuits, and Nkhamenya Girls in Kasungu. Interestingly all the awardees this year got nine points each.

The Group Executive Officer for Old Mutual Edith Jiya presided over the event and commended Zodiak Broadcasting Station for organising the event because, she said, it is a great way to encourage girls to continue performing well in school.

Science for All Coordinator Marah Chibwana expressed her happiness that all awardees expressed interest to pursue careers in the science field which, she said, is in line with the overall aim of the Science for All initiative by MLW.

The girls received a cash prize of K150,000 each which was jointly given by Old Mutual and the Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Programme. They also received trophies and a lot of jubilation from the students at St Mary’s Girls’ Secondary School and all patrons present.

The Science for All Initiative was established in 2018 with the aim of promoting biomedical and clinical science careers among students in primary, secondary, and tertiary education.
